We are building our ‘Learning Toolkit’ in school. This is a programme promoting the skill of ‘metacognition’, which means to think about thinking, to help children grow as learners and strengthen their understanding of their own learning.
As a school, we have created a Toolkit, in consultation with what children and staff think are important attributes for learning. We have had a launch event and each week a new learning tool is introduced in assembly. Children who have displayed this learning tool well are recognised during assembly. Classes then use this in their ‘language of learning’ for the focus week and beyond, with visual reminders displayed in class once each tool has been explored.
